Hockey Men’s 1s scoop ‘Team of the Semester’ Award

It was announced midway through last week’s Snowball that the Hockey Men’s 1s scooped the prestigious ‘Team of the Semester’ award for Semester 1. The team fought off competition from Badminton and Rugby to secure this well-deserved accolade and it puts the cherry on the top of a mighty league run, due to recent performances in the BUCS Premiership. The 1s are currently joint top of the division, and the upcoming games will be crucial in order to secure the top position and gain a good cup fixture after Christmas.

Captain, Nik Rieger, was naturally very happy with the team’s progress and commented “After a rough start of the season, we’ve developed as a team and are starting to implement our game philosophy. We had one of the best performances I’ve witnessed in my university career so far when beating Exeter away 3-1, and there’s still room for improvement. It’s now within our own ability to win the league and we’ll keep working hard to make it happen!”

At this moment in time, midway through the season, the Hockey club are currently sitting pretty on 173 BUCS points for the University of Bath; 60 more than Football and 61 more than Rugby. The Men’s 1s team contribution to date is more than the entire Lacrosse club.

Hockey Chairman, Freddie Everett, is also delighted by the club’s success so far this year and said, “Going into this season our aim was simple. We wanted to distance ourselves from our rivals and ensure the standard of hockey was strong from 1st to 5th team.

“For the first time ever, at the half way point, we have more Bath teams ahead of Exeter in their respective leagues. Every single Men’s side is either first or second in their league meaning that the top spots of the top 4 leagues in this region are occupied by a Bath team!

“We will be aiming to use this strong start to take momentum into the cup. The Men’s 2s are certainly looking like favourites to win at the moment. They are most definitely our ones to watch!

“The progress of our women has also been excellent with the Ladies 3s top of the league on track for promotion and the Ladies 2s challenging in 2nd place of their respective league”

All 9 Bath Hockey teams face fixtures next week on the final Wednesday of Semester, with many playing at home on the Astros in the STV.
