Move over *insert other generic pizza restaurant here * there’s a new place in town. That place is Tobias and the Angel.
Now, I’m not sure exactly who Tobias is and what an angel’s got to do with it but one thing is for certain, they sure know how to make good pizza. Like any closely kept secret, it’s well-hidden, at that end of town you don’t really venture to unless you’re going to Moles or showing your parents the Crescent. But I urge you, go! Make the trek up Milsom Street because the reward is an understated wonder of pizza heaven. Located in a basement, it follows the theme of many of Bath’s venues, but unlike the sweaty, dingy depths of your club nights, it offers a cosy, almost rustic atmosphere with large wooden tables and uncovered brick walls. Perfect for a date (because let’s face it no girl wants to be taken to Nandos, even on a Tinder date), which you can impress by ordering a craft beer from their huge range of international options, some coming as far afield as the US! And for all you wine lovers out there, there are over 30 different wines by the glass to choose from. The choice is so extensive that the drinks are displayed in a little book, reminiscent of those you had as a kid for school.
Once you’ve spent a good deal of time trying to decide which drink you’ll go for (if you’re anything like me at least) you’ll have to then make the difficult decision of what pizza to try, because with South American and Japanese influences, you won’t find your average Margherita or Pepperoni here. Oh no, this calls for something a bit more adventurous like the El Mexicana, featuring torn chicken breast, guacamole, jalapenos and red onion or the “Delhi Belly” which, despite the name, is a scrummy combination of chicken tikka, peppers, yoghurt and mint. Or, I can highly recommend the “Taiwan Triad”; an unusual crispy shredded duck, Hoisin sauce, spring onion and cucumber number. Normally, I’m a sucker for pizza being the way it should be (I am half Italian after all), but in this case the carefully combined flavours work so well, and on a deliciously crispy pizza base handcrafted to perfection, that really I just have to tell you to go with it.
And lucky for us students there are some fab deals to take advantage of. Their slightly smaller “healthy” pizza options with salad is only £6.50 all day, every day and we all know less pizza means more room for pudding right? Which you really should make room for because they are just as good as their main course counterparts (think warm pecan pie, oozing with indulgence). There’s also 241 cocktails ANYTIME, 4 craft cans for £10 and if you buy two large glasses of wine, Tobias will give you the rest for free!
It’s the perfect balance of expertly crafted pizza, great drinks and amazingly good value all housed in a cosy, date-night worthy setting. And if you don’t feel like getting out of your pyjamas to try the amazingness, you can now order on Deliveroo! So be careful, it might just become your new favourite place in Bath.
