Prospects for Hockey Men’s 1s Title

After a undefeated season so far, the UoBHC Men’s 1s are in with a chance of winning the Southern Premiership this coming Wednesday (15th February). After three fantastic performances following the Christmas break, the Men’s 1s are 1 point clear at the top of the league, with a game in hand on closest rivals Exeter and with only 2 games remaining.

While the Men’s 1s sit at the top of the league, it’s safe to say the journey there has not been an easy one. With controversial fixture scheduling due to the Junior World Cup taking place throughout November, the boys have had some tricky fixtures following Christmas. They had to travel down to Exeter during the examination period but still managed to come away with a hard fought 3-1 win (Goals from Adam Croutear, Jonny Verity, and Peter Scott).

Credit to all of the players for making themselves available despite exams on the day. They were then unable to enjoy the luxury of an Inter-Semester Break as the boys were all in Bath to train ahead of their fixture away in Reading during ISB.

With Exeter losing to Reading the previous week, it provided the Bath boys with a chance to open up an advantage at the top of the table, but it also meant the Reading boys would prove to be tough opposition.

Another strong performance from Bath meant they again came away with a 3-1 victory (Goals from Lewis Davies, Jonny Verity, and Lewis Jowett). Last week it was local rivals Bristol standing in the way of Bath’s pursuit of the South Premiership title, but another great performance for the UoBHC boys meant they came away as 4-0 victors (Goals from Jay Reddy (2), and Harry Skinner (2)).

The Men’s 1s appear to be revitalised after Christmas as super-star Peter Scott has returned to the squad from international duty. The boys are in a terrific run of form and have the opportunity to achieve something special on Wednesday. Captain, Jonny Verity, said “The boys are very excited for Wednesday, it’s our first home game since November and more importantly it’s Club Day. Hopefully that means a big crowd to watch us take three points and win the league!”

UoBHC has 7 teams playing at home on Wednesday the 15th of February, which provides the perfect opportunity for a Club Day. The Club are encouraging both members and non-members to come down to the STV hockey pitches to join in the atmosphere and show their support. With the Men’s 1s playing Oxford Brookes in the headline game at 4pm there could be an awesome climax to a fantastic Club Day.

Verity continued, “Brookes are a strong, well trained team – they’re third in the league for a reason. If we play as we have in the last few games though I back us to come away with the win. Keeping our structure, sticking to our values, and not letting the occasion get to us will be key for us to succeed.”

Wednesday also sees numerous Cup Matches for the UoBHC teams. Full details of the Club Day, including a full fixture list, will be posted to the Facebook event ahead of the day.
